How do we handle the world when it feels like everything around us is falling apart?
You might feel this way right now or have been throughout the entire year of 2020. It hasn’t been a smooth ride, friends.
Episode #102 of the Living Enneagram podcast went live on November 3rd, 2020 - not just an Election Day, but an Election that has many people feeling a whole spectrum of emotions...predominantly: Fear and anxiety.
With this in mind, I wanted to talk about how we can best handle these two overwhelming and sometimes crippling emotions because let’s face it - we ALL experience them regardless of our Enneagram type, just in different ways.
First things first: We need to lean into God in times of fear and uncertainty.
Children of God are not afraid of what is happening in the world
Because of the hope, confidence, and strength we have apart from this world, we know there is no way that we will slip and fall.
No matter what happens on this earth - all of the chaos, the sin, the brokenness - what if we just said, “My God’s got me. I have hope far beyond this moment”?
I’m not saying you should be oblivious to what’s going on around you. But you and I have access to this type of confidence.
Isaiah 26:3 says,
You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.
Think about this. God keeps us in perfect peace when our minds are fixed on HIM. But when we lose sight of that, we lose our peace.
If we trust in God and what’s to come after this life on earth, we are equipped to walk through the corruption. We can walk through the fire with hope and light for others - and ditch the fear and anxiety.
God uses us to calm the chaos, to bring peace and light to the world - but He does so with those whose eyes are fixed on Him. When we continue to worry about what will happen, we’re not effective for the Kingdom of God.
Remember, Jesus wasn’t caught up in the people who were against him - He was focused on one thing: Giving his life for us on the cross.
So, ask yourself: What is your hope in? Truly. Is it how much money you have? Who the president is? How our government operates?
We have to be self-aware of this and remember to run back to Jesus. Pray and ask the Lord to reveal this to you.
Fear and Uncertainty Within Your Enneagram Types
Now that we understand why we need Jesus to combat fear and uncertainty, let’s take a look at how the different triads tend to fall prey to these emotions without Jesus at the forefront of our minds:
The Heart Triad (Types 2, 3, and 4): We have a deep desire to be connected to people, and emotions are loud in our lives. One minute you feel loving toward the world, and the next it feels like the world is ending. Right now, it might feel like you’re riding a rollercoaster of feelings.
The Head Triad (Types 5, 6, and 7) Your greatest desire is to seek security, so it’s understandable that times like these can feel like they are far from secure.
The Gut Triad (Types 8, 9, and 1) All of these types care deeply about justice. In 2020, there are so many injustices - so our Gut Triad friends are more than likely feeling unsteady and fearful for what’s to come.
So, what does it look like for us to flip the script and overcome the default of our personalities to become more whole and complete in Jesus, despite fear and uncertainty?
1. To go from uncertainty to certainty, limit what you allow in your mind. Do you have a family member who rants about politics and it only adds to your fear? Put up healthy boundaries.
Turn off the news, social media, the podcasts that are leading people into freakout mode. Jesus tells us to guard our hearts and you and I have control of what we fill our minds with.
2. We have to look for security in the right place. I mentioned this before, but I can’t emphasize this enough. God did not intend for us to find security in our President or politicians, in our government, in money, or any other person or thing on this earth.
We are to ultimately find our security - aka freedom from fear and uncertainty - in the Lord.
3. Increase your mission in life. What are you doing with your time? If you’re in a season of not doing much, think about how much time you have to simmer on the anxieties and fears in your head, like the election or COVID-19.
It’s time to replace it with something else. Maybe that’s ministering to friends, pursuing a career, encouraging friends, learning how to bake. It could be anything you feel will help you be more intentional with your time. We need a purpose in our days to keep us hopeful and on the path that God wants us to take.
You’re not a failure for feeling fear and uncertainty. But it’s what you do with it. Are we going to feed it, or are we going to say,
“This does not have control over me. I am a child of God and God’s Word says that I have access to perfect peace right now if I choose to.”
My prayer for you is that you desire to be a contributor, not controlled by everything that goes on around you, friend. I hope these tips help you feel confident and hopeful with whatever it is that you are facing.
